Grindrod RS5 and RS7 Locomotives Cab Cooling for GPR Leasing Africa

Tuesday, July 7, 2015

GPR Leasing Africa has outfitted the Grindrod RS5 and RS7 locomotives with DC Airco’s heavy duty DC13004 rooftop air conditioning units, providing reliable cab cooling for operators working in demanding African rail environments. The retrofit ensures stable climate control powered directly from the locomotive’s 74 Vdc electrical system, allowing consistent operation without additional power converters.

The DC13004 system delivers strong cooling performance, with a capacity of approximately 3,8 kW, ensuring the locomotive cabs remain comfortable during long operating shifts and high temperature conditions. Designed for rugged rolling stock applications, the unit maintains full performance in ambient temperatures up to 45 °C. Its airflow of around 800 m³/h supports effective air circulation throughout the cab, helping crews remain alert, safe, and productive.

Engineered as a retrofit friendly solution, the DC13004 features a robust rooftop condenser module, a compact ceiling mounted air distribution panel, and a dedicated electrical box. Prefilled refrigerant hoses and quick connect fittings allow rapid installation with minimal downtime for the locomotives. The system’s built in PLC controller provides real time monitoring and diagnostics, ensuring reliable operation under heavy vibration, dust, and high duty cycles typical of African freight and shunting operations.

Constructed from zinc plated steel with a durable powder coated finish, the air conditioning unit is built to withstand extreme operating environments, ensuring long service life and reduced maintenance demands.

By equipping the RS5 and RS7 locomotives with the DC13004 cab cooling system, GPR Leasing Africa significantly improves operator comfort, enhances safety, and increases operational uptime across its fleet.
