Class 317 Fleet Cab Air Conditioning Retrofit from Abellio
Abellio has successfully completed the retrofit installation of a new cab air conditioning system on units of the Class 317 electric multiple unit (EMU) fleet, enhancing driver comfort and modernizing equipment originally introduced in the early 1980s.
The upgrade utilizes the DC Airco DC11000 split type air conditioning system, a rugged unit designed specifically for railway driver cabs and compliant with key European railway standards. The DC11000 platform delivers high cooling efficiency, low power consumption, and dependable operation in demanding rail environments.
Configured for this project, the unit operates on 110 Vdc, fully compatible with the electrical systems of refurbished Class 317 cabs. It provides a cooling capacity of approximately 10,000 BTU / 3000 W, ensuring effective temperature control during peak summer conditions and long distance operational duties. As a retrofit kit, the system is engineered for straightforward installation on existing rolling stock. Its modular split layout—with an internal evaporator and an under frame mounted condenser—allows integration without significant modifications to the original cab structure. The system’s self sealing quick connectors allow hoses to be disconnected and reconnected without refrigerant loss, simplifying installation and reducing downtime.
The retrofit program undertaken by Abellio highlights a continued commitment to improving working conditions for drivers. Prior to this upgrade, Class 317 cabs relied primarily on forced ventilation, a limitation during warm weather operation on suburban and commuter routes. The new system delivers stable, controllable cooling and aligns the fleet with modern comfort expectations.
With this successful installation completed on 29 May 2015, Abellio advances its broader strategy of enhancing the longevity and performance of existing rolling stock through targeted modernization projects. The implementation of the DC Airco cab cooling system provides a long term, maintainable solution compatible with both present and future operational requirements.
