
Battery Chiller Delivered for MAN eTGM – MAN’s First Electric Truck
DC Airco has delivered its 6 kW high efficiency battery chiller (Truck N44) for use on the MAN eTGM, MAN Truck & Bus’s first fully electric truck. The system was developed to support the thermal management of the vehicle’s high voltage battery system under demanding commercial vehicle operating conditions. As electric trucks place high requirements on battery performance, reliability, and lifespan, effective thermal management is essential. The DC Airco battery chiller ensures that the traction batteries of the MAN eTGM are maintained within their optimal operating temperature range, contributing directly to battery durability, consistent performance, and operational safety.
Battery Thermal Management for Heavy Duty Electric Truck
The DC Airco Truck N44 chiller is a self contained liquid cooling system specifically engineered for electric trucks operating under heavy duty conditions. With a cooling capacity of 6 kW, the unit efficiently manages heat generated by the battery packs during high load operation, regenerative braking, and fast charging cycles.
Designed in collaboration with Altran and MAN, the chiller supports cooling of batteries using either water or glycol mixtures and is optimized for the thermal demands of commercial electric vehicles.
Robust Design for Commercial Vehicle Applications
The chiller operates with a 400 Vac power supply and features a 24 Vdc control voltage, allowing straightforward integration into the eTGM’s electrical architecture. The system is equipped with a PLC based controller, providing advanced connectivity, scalability, diagnostics, and simplified serviceability—key factors for fleet operation and OEM integration.
Housed in a rugged steel enclosure with a durable powder coated finish, the unit is built to withstand vibration, environmental exposure, and continuous operation typical of commercial trucking applications.
Optimizing Battery Performance and Lifespan
Maintaining stable battery temperatures is critical for electric trucks, as excessive heat can reduce battery efficiency and accelerate aging. The DC Airco battery chiller actively removes excess heat from the battery system and transfers it to the ambient environment, helping to:
