Air Conditioning Selected for BN Tram Refurbishment Program in Belgium
As part of a major mid life refurbishment program, 45 BN trams operated by TEC Belgium are being upgraded by Alstom, with DC Airco supplying the climate control solution for the operator cabs. The refurbishment aims to extend the service life of the BN tram fleet while improving driver comfort, safety, and system reliability. A key element of the modernization program is the installation of the DC11001 railway split air conditioner, specifically developed for rolling stock applications and compliant with current railway fire safety standards.
Railway Certified Climate Control for Urban Trams The DC11001 is a heavy duty 24 Vdc split air conditioning system designed for operator cabs in trams and trains. Each unit provides 3 kW of cooling capacity, ensuring stable cab temperatures during continuous urban service and varying ambient conditions. The split configuration allows flexible installation within the tram layout, combining a compact indoor evaporator with a remotely installed outdoor condenser. Prefilled refrigerant lines with self sealing quick connectors enable efficient installation and simplified maintenance during the refurbishment process.
Safety, Comfort, and Reliability Engineered for rail applications, the DC11001 complies with EN 45545 2 Hazard Level 3 (HL3) fire protection requirements. An integrated PLC controller with diagnostic display provides real time system monitoring, supporting reliable operation throughout the tram’s service life. By maintaining a comfortable working environment for drivers, the DC11001 contributes to improved concentration, reduced fatigue, and consistent operational performance within dense urban networks.
This project highlights DC Airco’s role as a trusted supplier of railway approved DC air conditioning solutions for fleet refurbishments and life extension programs across Europe.
