Our standard DC 9200 HA and DC 17000 24/48 VDC are used in the mining industry to cool underground refuge shelters. Powered by batteries these chambers offer up to 4 days of shelter to miners in case of a disaster. We are looking into explosion proof versions of these units.

Due to the many unfortunate underground mining accidents over the last years the use of refuge chambers has dramatically increased. Especially the accident in Chile were 33 men were stuck under the ground for 19 days before contact was made, showed the world that having a refuge chamber with food and water makes sense.

In many mines the temperature is between 30C to 55C and if the people are sitting in a closed chamber the indoor temperature will go up even further and the men inside are “cooked” in their own body heat.
Therefore many refuge chambers are equipped with air conditioning units.
However in case of a power failure, due to a collapse of tunnels, the power can be cut off and the air conditioners do not work unless they are dc powered and run off a battery pack.

Nowadays several mining safety companies buy our universal dc powered split units on 24 VDC to do the job.
